Tetraplegia

Sometimes referred to as quadriplegia.  The complete or incomplete paralysis from the neck downwards as a result of severe spinal cord injury, affecting all four limbs and the trunk.

Tetraplegia - The complete or incomplete paralysis from the neck downwards as a result of severe spinal cord injury, affecting all four limbs and the trunk.
  • It affects both sensation and mobility because messages to the brain have become interrupted.
  • A tetraplegic is unable to walk and has limited reach and dexterity because use of the arms is severely impaired.
  • Some accidents occur during active participation in sport: most often to young, dynamic, active, individuals.
  • One minute, they are fit, active and healthy. The next minute, they are paralysed, unable to move and in need of care for the rest of their lives.
